Mental Illness, Mass Shootings, and the Politics of American Firearms – Grand Rounds at Brown University

December 3, 2015 @ 4:00 am - 5:30 pm

Dr. Jonathan Metzl presents “Mental Illness, Mass Shootings, and the Politics of American Firearms” for the Simon Lecture series.

The Stanley D. Simon, MD, Lecture and Forum

Dr. Stanley D. Simon (1916-1993) was a prominent Rhode Island orthopedic surgeon with a life-long commitment to service. He is well remembered for his oft-repeated admonition to “treat the patient and not the disease.” In all aspects of his professional life, Dr. Simon embodied the ideals of altruism, accountability, excellence, duty, service, honor, integrity, and respect for others.

In 1994, Mrs. Marion Simon endowed the Stanley D. Simon, MD, Lecture and Forum in honor of her late husband. Recognizing that becoming a doctor involves much more than the acquisition of pertinent knowledge, the Simon lectureship provides an opportunity for students to explore, with physicians, the “human” dimension of medicine.

The Stanley D. Simon, MD, Lecture and Forum memorializes the values of community and the physician’s place in society, which carries privileges as well as responsibilities. It is important for students to reflect on the attributes of humanism and professionalism as they prepare to become members of the medical community and the profession of medicine.
